Mformation secures mobile PCs over cellular networks.

"Mobile device management firm Mformation has added support for Intel's Anti-Theft technology to its platform, giving IT administrators the ability to manage or disable laptops via the cellular network...

The added support for Intel's Anti-Theft technology, a feature of the updated Core vPro platform, means that administrators can now reach a lost or stolen laptop and disable it, so long as the device is anywhere within mobile network coverage.

Because the Mformation platform is hosted by the carrier or service provider, the customer's IT department just needs to flag a laptop or tablet as missing using a web-based console, and a lockdown command will be sent to the system if it is active...

The Anti-theft technology resides at the chipset and firmware level, and it is possible to send commands direct to it via the 3G modem and secure the laptop, even if the OS has not booted or is disabled, according to Mformation.

However, the downside is that this will only work with new systems that have Intel's technology and are configured with a cellular connection.

The Intel Anti-Theft support is actually part of a more general management solution, and Mformation now provides a Windows version of its OMA DM client, allowing administrators to manage and enforce policies on laptops via the mobile network."

Sprint's Xohm taps Mformation for remote device management.

"Sprint's WiMAX division announced a deal with device management software company Mformation Technologies to deliver device management capabilities for new Xohm-branded WiMAX-enabled mobile devices. Sprint plans to use Mformation's software to remotely manage the WiMAX devices on its network. The operator is commercially launching WiMAX in Baltimore in September...

Still, device management software is not fully optimized for WiMAX-only devices, noted Matt Bancroft, chief marketing officer with Mformation. Since most of the devices running on Sprint's network will be dual-mode CDMA/WiMAX devices, Mformation is conducting the remote device management capabilities via the CDMA connection, which has been fully established.

'WiMAX is more challenging because of the way the technology is architected,' said Bancroft. 'It's an all-IP technology, which means that the architecture doesn't support SMS technology that is commonly used today to initiate a device-management session. There are well-defined standards in cellular that makes it straightforward to understand what device a users is using. With WiMAX, users will be connecting in a multiple mac address environment. So there are a bunch of new challenges that have to be overcome.'"

Mformation Delivers Enhancement to Platform for Management of Devices and Services over WiMAX.

"Mformation is commercially deploying MFORMATION SERVICE MANAGER™ for WiMAX to a number of customers, to provide seamless all-IP device management and remote activation capabilities... For a first-class experience, mobile users require that their devices be managed in the same way, regardless of whether they are connected to an all-IP WiMAX network or a cellular network (including CDMA, CDMA 2000, GSM, GPRS, UMTS, WCDMA, HSPA). Regardless of what network their subscribers are using at any given point in time, service providers still need to configure services, remotely activate users, get a real-time view of devices, distribute and update applications and firmware, secure devices and data and monitor service availability and performance."
