Smart and Red Bend Unveil the Netphone.

"Using Red Bend’s standards-based vRapid MSM solution, SMART [the leading Philippines’ wireless services provider, with 44.1m subscribers] can manage its suite of SMART-branded embedded software and apps, including WAC-compliant widgets, individually and independently from the OEM’s firmware, using the OMA-DM SCOMO standard. It can also push new, revenue-generating mobile services that use WAC widgets to Netphone subscribers over the air, rather than relying on consumers to discover new apps on the WAC-based SMART Shop or Android Market. And it can offer the same software-managed user experience across different device price points and mobile platforms, including Android and Brew MP."

VMware forms virtualization alliance with LG.

"Operators, which are always looking for a way to raise their profile in enterprises, have only shown lukewarm interest in virtualized handsets so far. But VMware hinted at a likely customer by gaining a supporting statement from Verizon Wireless on its news release - Humphrey Chen, executive director of new technologies at the carrier, said: 'We're seeing interest from Verizon Wireless customers in the area of mobile personas, which allow a personal mobile phone to be leveraged in a professional setting in a secure way that is IT-approved. The kind of virtualization VMware offers helps to make this happen, and we're evaluating ways to help our customers achieve this.'

However, there are rivals for VMware's market. It will have competition from VirtualLogix (in which Cisco, Intel and others have invested), Intel's own Wind River Systems and Open Kernel Labs."

Give Your Phone a Split Personality.

"Since the phone is the new computer, and folks seem unwilling to carry two of the things around (not to mention they’re expensive to buy service for), one big promise of virtualization is toting your work life and your personal life on one handset–or iPad. We’ve all experienced the pain of having a work and personal laptop and trying to synch files between them, and IT departments are currently trying to handle the influx of personal phones in the office, so creating a controllable 'office-safe' environment on a handset is promising. How promising? Well, earlier this week, Red Bend Software bought VirtualLogix, a company that makes a hypervisor for phones, in order to make handset virtualization palatable for enterprises."

Red Bend Software acquires VirtualLogix.

Android Steps Closer to Fragmentation.

"Wind River announced today a commercial version of the Android platform that comes with pre-integrated apps and global support and is optimized for Texas Instruments’ OMAP 3. But the offering represents one more step toward a dangerously fragmented Android universe.

The product is targeted at device manufacturers as a faster, more efficient alternative to building a platform from the ground up. It is a validated, fully compliant OS based on the latest versions of the Android SDK, Wind River said. It comes with software from partners including Adobe, PacketVideo and Red Bend Software, and features enhanced Android user interface and personalization options that enable carriers and manufacturers to present their brands on-screen."

Device Management Is Essential for Managing a Range of Wirelessly Connected Devices.

"Machine-to-machine (M2M) is another wireless segment that has adopted OMA DM for two reasons: 1) the nomadic nature of some M2M segments (e.g., automotive and telematics) force the module to engage with several networks and even roam to other countries; thus, the module must be able to work in a multi-server environment, and (2) the cost of adopting standards-based DM is much less expensive than a proprietary environment because the integration with devices and the certification with networks can be quicker. With the inherent functionality that exists in OMA DM, such as provisioning, managing security and the ability to work globally, operators can benefit from lower cost of ownership by using their already deployed OMA DM infrastructure and utilizing it for M2M."

"In Europe, a number of drivers promise M2M market expansion. In April 2009, the U.K. passed new legislation to encourage energy efficiency. The legislation requires all profile-class type meters to upgrade to new 'smart meters' by 2014... On the automotive front, analyst firm Berg Insight recently forecast that 3.5 million passenger cars in Europe will have on-board telematics by year’s end. Stolen vehicle tracking is the main application, followed by motor insurance telematics, connected navigation, automatic emergency call and driver assistance. In France, even M2M use for toll collection is expanding."

Mobile Phone Software Company Not Pleased With Courgette, Sues Google.

"Red Bend, a VC-backed mobile phone software developer, is taking Google to court over alleged infringement of a patent it holds.

In its legal complaint filed earlier this week in Boston’s district court, Red Bend claims the Internet giant is using a patented algorithm that allows it to issue smaller-sized updates for its Chrome Web browser.

The software maker says it has invented technology that enables wireless carriers to distribute updates for mobile-phone software and that Google’s updating process for Chrome uses a similar differential compression algorithm called Courgette (that’d be the French word for zucchini)."

Red Bend stacks up two new mobile software patents.

"The Waltham-based company, which makes software enabling service providers to push firmware updates to subscribers, now holds three patents in the U.S. and eight worldwide.

The new patents cover software that embeds a reverse-update option in every mobile software update, so that users and service providers can uninstall problematic upgrades or downloads and return a software package to its prior status.

A second patent covers software designed to ensure continuity in the upgrade process. If a phone loses power or shuts down during an upgrade, the software is designed to let the process resume at the cut-off point."

This is an exciting area of growth for our industry."
