iPhone for the enterprise? It's possible, says Sybase.
Paul Mah writes: "What sparked my interest was how Sybase recognized the limitations of consumer devices like the iPhone to operate in an enterprise environment, and attempts to address these limitations via a sandbox approach.
Essentially, information that is corporate owned and delivered is clearly demarcated from what belongs to the employee, creating a natural separation between the two types of data. Any security policies configured by enterprise IT is enforced only within the enterprise sandbox, leaving the 'consumer' half of the device untouched."

Sybase CEO says the future is mobile.
"We want to be No. 1 in enterprise mobility." -- Sybase CEO John Chen (source)
"So anything that moves along creating more mobile apps for business [is interesting to Sybase]. You need to subdivide in verticals—there are financial, health care, transportation, logistics people, government sector, a whole bunch of them. So what we are looking to do is really enrich a development platform.
In our case now, what we're focusing [on] is a development environment that actually leads people through to develop a mobile-based app, or mobilize an app. For lack of better words, call it application enablement. We need those technologies; we have a lot of those. We need to put it together in a coherent and logical manner."

Sybase, HTC aim to improve Windows Mobile devices.
"iAnywhere Solutions has announced a partnership with High Tech Computer (HTC) that could help smart phones based on Windows Mobile compete more effectively with the BlackBerry, according to an iAnywhere executive.
iAnywhere, a subsidiary of Sybase, has started to work with the Taiwanese contract manufacturer during the design stage of its products, to ensure that iAnywhere's suite of management and security software, called Information Anywhere, runs smoothly on new devices when they are released.
HTC makes most of the smart phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants) based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile, which are then sold under other brands. Information Anywhere is widely used by companies to manage and secure mobile devices for employees."

3GSM: More of the same for enterprise mobility.
"OMA DM means absolutely nothing to an IT department. Well, that's not actually true. As currently defined and implemented, OMA DM means that the IT department is going to be fighting with the carrier over firmware updates from here until eternity. And that's about it. The IT department will deploy an IT-centric 'enterprise management' platform which will have the capability to support mobile devices. Sybase iAnywhere's Afaria product exemplifies this type of platform... we are babes in the woods who fail to understand that IT departments have been doing enterprise management since before mobile operators went digital. Mobile device management may be new to these carrier upstarts, but it's old hat to the IT community."
Sybase makes big mobile play.
"'The mobile messaging market in the U.S. alone is expected to grow to $7.5 billion by 2008,' said John Chen, Sybase chairman, CEO and president, in a statement. 'Getting closer to this exploding mobile market through carriers is a key extension of our Unwired Enterprise strategy.'... 'Given Sybase's leadership in enterprise mobility, this acquisition is a perfect fit,' said Mike Daniels, Mobile 365 executive chairman. 'With Mobile 365's technology, Sybase can now deliver any mobile message or application to any handset -- anytime, anywhere.'"
